Though overshadowed by its more popular neighbor to the east, Portugal remains one of Europe's unspoilt gems. This land of traditional villages and vibrant cities has a countryside strewn with historical treasures and a wide assortment of World Heritage sites - natural and cultural wonders that offer a window into this once great seafaring nation.
Lisbon
Lisbon is Europe's most westerly capital, built on seven hills tucked away far beyond the Pyrenees. All history's conquering and itinerant hordes have found their way here - Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors, not to mention the Spaniards and French, while its colonies have brought settlers from Africa, South America, South east Asia and China.
The Portuguese discoveries and the launching of the maritime trade empire made Lisbon a true world capital. The city was destroyed in 1755 by a massive earthquake. The government took the opportunity to rebuild the city from scratch, making one of the greatest changes to the face and character of Lisbon, masterminded by the Prime Minister, the Marqu?s de
Pombal.
Lisbon today is a most interesting city to visit, with much to offer - dazzling monuments, delightful parks, interesting museums and lively bars and cafes, very good restaurants.
As with large parts of the Iberian Peninsula, extensive and high quality golf courses and facilities are driving development around Lisbon and to a lesser extent in the Algarve.
Lisbon is the centre of the conference and events market in Portugal and it offers wonderful opportunities for activities like sailing, 4 x 4 driving in the Sintra Range, climbing and mountain biking.
The Algarve meanwhile offers a great option for more modest budgets and whenever selected always exceeds expectations. Vilamora is a key centre with bustling nightlife, the biggest marina in Portugal and hotels that offer splendid value.
Good air connections and growing sophistication make Portugal a destination that is growing in popularity.
The Algarve
While the southernmost region of Portugal is undoubtedly home to some of Europe's most spectacular, white, sandy beaches, the area has a lot more to offer than just sand and sea. The Algarve has been receiving corporate visitors from the UK since the mid 1960s. Nowadays, it is a firm choice for the British conference market. The Algarve's gentle autumns and pleasant springs make it a great place to visit out of season, when most of the hotels, bars and restaurants remain open and organisers are able to pick up great deals.
The region's mild winters make November to March the ideal time for golfers from all over the world to take advantage of the the numerous courses (although amateur tournaments take place throughout the year).
